High-Risk Pregnancy

Every pregnancy is unique and sometimes requires extra monitoring and care.

That’s why we provide advanced prenatal care to keep you and your baby safe during pregnancy and birth. Our Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) staff have specialized training and experience in the care of high-risk mothers and their babies. Woman’s provides you with direct access to advanced care, counseling and diagnostic services. It is the highest level of specialized care in a family-friendly environment for both you and your baby.

This includes the Woman’s Fetal Diagnosis and Care Center and Newborn and Infant Intensive Care Center (NICU) where expert surgeons, neonatologists and other specialists provide you and your baby with special care. This includes inpatient care for women with high-risk pregnancies and the most advanced fetal intervention available. Woman’s has an 84-bed, Level III Regional NICU with all private family rooms.

When to see a Maternal-Fetal Medicine Physician

Our Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) specialists work with your obstetrician to offer total obstetrical care for all types of pregnancy complications. Your doctor may refer you to see a MFM specialist if you have chronic medical conditions (such as diabetes or hypertension) or other high-risk pregnancy specific issue such as:

  • Abnormal screening results
  • Multiple birth pregnancy
  • Fetal congenital anomalies
  • Prior pregnancy complications
  • Placenta previa
  • Vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC)
  • Morbidly adherent placenta (MAP)

You may be referred to a Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist if you…

  • Are age 35 at the time of delivery
  • Have a chronic medical condition, such as diabetes, hypertension or obesity
  • Have prior pregnancy complications, such as preterm birth, preeclampsia or IUGR
  • Are expecting multiple babies

Our specialists repair birth defects before a baby is born. At Woman’s, fetal surgeries can include:

  • Spina bifida (myelomeningocele)
  • Twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS)
  • Twin reversed arterial perfusion
  • Lower urinary tract obstruction
  • Congenital pulmonary airway malformation
  • Fetal anemia/non-immune hydrops
  • Placentia Previa
