Frequently Asked Questions
Infusion therapy helps manage many acute and chronic conditions by delivering fluids, medications, or nutrients directly into the bloodstream through a vein. This method allows your body to absorb the treatment faster than an oral medication since it bypasses the digestive system. A trained healthcare provider administers the prescribed therapy at a controlled rate in hospitals, clinics, or outpatient settings.
Some benefits of infusion therapy include:
- Delivering medication directly into the bloodstream for faster results
- Ensuring precise and controlled dosing
- Bypassing the digestive system, which is especially ideal for patients who can’t take oral medications
- Providing rapid symptom relief
- Being administered in controlled medical settings by trained professionals
Most sessions take 2.5 hours, but the length of each treatment can vary based on the infusion.
It is normal for some people to experience brief discomfort during the IV insertion. However, you shouldn’t feel any pain during the infusion.
Infusion therapy is typically provided on the 5th floor of the Main Hospital Building in the Infusion Therapy Center. Before administering your treatment, a trained medical professional will verify your identity and the medication that you will receive. Once everything has been confirmed, and the IV catheter is in place, the nurse will start your infusion.
Throughout your treatment, your care team will monitor you to ensure everything goes smoothly. The team will monitor vital signs and check the IV site for swelling, redness or pain. If any issues occur, they can adjust the infusion rate or take other necessary steps. You will also have access to numerous amenities to make your treatment as comfortable as possible. Because you will be receiving plenty of fluids, don’t be surprised if you need to use the restroom - this is normal!
Most people can do their normal daily activities after treatment.
