Woman's Internship in SciEntific Research
About WISER
The Woman’s Internship in SciEntific Research (WISER) offers a robust summer research internship experience with Woman’s Hospital Baton Rouge, Louisiana. WISER engages students considering a career in science or medicine in the field of women’s health, particularly suited for those interested in pursuing a career in science or an MD, DO, or PhD. The program includes a core curriculum addressing the fundamentals of biomedical research as well as the opportunity to pursue, present, and publish an independent research project.
The goals of WISER are to:
- Build a talented, diverse research community to support progress in the field of women’s health.
- Lay a foundation for future researchers to understand research theory and the logistics of research conduction in the field of women’s health.
WISER Structure and Offerings:
- Five-week intensive internship, approximately 32 hours per week
- Week 1: Hospital and research orientation and training (CITI, EPIC, etc.)
- Weeks 2-3: Overview of research projects and project development
- Weeks 4-5: Execution of research projects and clinical shadowing
- Throughout: Weekly journal club and lectures
- Throughout: One-on-one mentorship with Woman’s Director of Scientific Research

- Lecture 2: Regulatory Side of Research
- Lecture 3: Logistics of Research
- Lecture 4: Data Collection, Integrity, and Quality
- Lecture 5: Statistics
- Lecture 6: How to Write a Manuscript
- Lecture 7: How to Make a Poster
Eligibility
To be eligible for this internship, you must be enrolled in a university and in good academic and behavioral standing as assessed by transcript and/or a letter of recommendation
