Car Seat Safety

Louisiana law requires you to buckle up your children in proper car seats.

Selecting the safest possible vehicle and the best fit, size and type of car seat is one of the most important things you can do to keep your child safe.

Before Buying a New Car Seat

  • Ask your vehicle’s manufacturer for recommendations about specific brands of child safety seats for the vehicle you own.
  • Visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to see the ratings for child safety seats by how easy they are to install correctly.
  • Install your child safety seat according to the seat instructions and your vehicle’s instructions.
  • Have the installation of your child safety seat checked by a certified child passenger safety technician. For help, contact a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician.

Benefits of Safety Seats

Motor vehicle crashes remain the leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children ages 14 and younger. Child safety seats, when used correctly, can save lives and prevent injuries.

Non-Regulated Products

Head supports, harness pads, mirrors and toys that did not come with your car seat have not been crash tested with your seat. There is no way to know how these additional products may affect the safety of your child’s car seat.
