A safe space to heal, Woman's Perinatal Mental Health Unit is the first of its kind in Louisiana, offering compassionate care to women facing mood and anxiety disorders during and after pregnancy.

Perinatal Mental Health Unit - Nurses Stations

The Perinatal Mental Health Unit (PMHU) provides comprehensive inpatient mental health care for women during any stage of pregnancy or up to one year after childbirth or pregnancy loss.

As Louisiana’s first inpatient mental health unit dedicated exclusively to perinatal patients, the PMHU features 10 private inpatient rooms thoughtfully designed for safety, comfort, and rest. Patients also have access to individual and group psychotherapy, recreational therapy, and peaceful time outdoors on a secure patio.

Patients who are at least 18 years old with a primary psychiatric diagnosis may be admitted to the unit if they meet one of the following criteria:

  • currently pregnant
  • have had a baby within the past 365 days
  • have experienced a documented pregnancy loss within the past 365 days


The PMHU treats patients with the following conditions:

  • Perinatal Depression
  • Perinatal Anxiety
  • Perinatal Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
  • Postpartum Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Perinatal Panic Disorder
  • Postpartum Psychosis
  • Bipolar Disorder in the Perinatal Period
