Nursing Excellence at Woman’s

Woman’s Hospital’s exceptional team includes nearly 900 nurses, each dedicated to improving the health of women and infants in our care and throughout the community. This commitment is reflected in our current Magnet® designation, which we have proudly earned four times since 2006 through the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®.

Magnet Recognition Program® designation, awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, is the highest national recognition for nursing excellence. It reflects a healthcare organization’s commitment to quality patient care, nursing professionalism, and continuous improvement.

For our nurses, Magnet® recognition means practicing in an environment that values clinical expertise, shared decision-making, professional development, and strong nursing leadership. Nurses are supported in advancing their education, participating in research and evidence-based practice, and contributing to improvements in patient care.

For patients and families, Magnet® recognition signifies safe, high-quality, and compassionate care. Magnet® organizations consistently demonstrate excellent patient outcomes, a culture of safety, and high levels of patient satisfaction.

Our Magnet Recognition Program® journey directly supports our mission to improve the health of women and infants, ensuring that every mother, baby, and family receives care grounded in excellence, safety, and innovation.

Professional Practice Model

Our Nursing Professional Practice Model reflects the foundation of how nurses deliver care, collaborate, and grow within our organization. Rooted in patient- and family-centered care, the model illustrates how our values, governance structures, and professional relationships support high-quality outcomes and an exceptional patient experience.

A key component of this model is shared governance, which empowers nurses at all levels to have a voice in clinical practice, quality improvement, and decision-making. Through active participation, nurses help shape policies, influence outcomes, and drive innovation at the point of care.

Guided by evidence-based practice and a commitment to lifelong learning, our nurses practice across the continuum from novice to expert. The model emphasizes teamwork, accountability, and cultural competence, ensuring that every nurse is empowered to contribute to safe, compassionate, and coordinated care.

Shared Governance

Collaborative decision-making is an essential part of nursing practice at Woman’s. Our shared governance structure, illustrated in the model below, consists of clinical nurse representatives from all departments who work together to make informed decisions within their areas of responsibility. These councils convene monthly to present recommendations to the Nurse Executive Council for review and approval. Once approved, the recommendations are put into action and overseen by the respective councils to ensure effective implementation.

  • Practice Council – Defines, evaluates, and maintains professional nursing practice standards to ensure safe, evidence-based, and patient-centered care. The council reviews policies, clinical guidelines, and practice changes to promote consistency, accountability, and clinical excellence across all nursing areas.
  • Quality and Safety Council – Monitors and improves quality outcomes, patient safety initiatives, and patient experience measures. This council analyzes data, identifies opportunities for improvement, and leads initiatives that enhance safety, reliability, and overall care outcomes.
  • Research Council – Promotes a culture of inquiry and evidence-based practice. The council supports nurses in participating in research activities, translating evidence into practice, and disseminating findings that advance nursing knowledge and improve patient care.
  • Nursing Leadership Council – Strengthens nursing leadership and supports effective management of clinical teams. The council focuses on leadership development, resource allocation, workforce engagement, and best practices that enhance both nurse satisfaction and patient care delivery.
  • Education and Professional Development Council – Fosters a learning environment that supports continuing education, specialty certification, career advancement, and professional growth. The council guides nurses to training programs, resources, and development opportunities that support excellence in patient care.
  • Night Shift Council – Advocates for nurses who provide care during overnight hours and addresses the unique needs of night shift practice. The council identifies opportunities to improve communication, workflow, safety, and engagement to ensure consistent, high-quality care for patients at all hours.
