Understanding the Dynamics of Poverty
What is a Poverty Simulation?
WHAT TO EXPECT
A Poverty Simulation is an immersive experience that simulates aspects of what it is like to live in poverty for one month. What is it like to live in poverty? Of course, no simulation can provide a full picture, but this experience allows you to walk in the shoes of an impoverished person and come face to face with how complex and interconnected issues of poverty really are.
You might be in a role such as:
-
A single parent
with limited resources and no transportation who must find a way to get to work and get their child to daycare.
-
An elderly person
who must find a way to pay for both utilities and medication
-
A young adult
who must care for siblings while their parent is incarcerated.
Disclosure
If you have experienced poverty at any time during your life, participation in this simulation may cause distress. However, your experiences are valuable to this program. If you would like to participate in other ways, such as volunteering to work one of the simulation stations, please contact Educational Services at Woman’s Hospital through the contacts listed below.
