Administrative Fellowship

Developing Strong Leaders for the Health Care Industry

The Woman’s Hospital Administrative Fellowship Program is a one-year, full-time paid position providing upcoming healthcare leaders the opportunity to gain a thorough understanding of hospital and clinic-based healthcare operations in a women’s-focused hospital environment. The fellow will directly work on projects focused on both operations and finance, foster professional growth through various leadership activities and gain experience in various administrative functions: strategic planning, marketing, human resources, and information technology.

Program Advantages

This Fellowship is designed to develop strong leaders for Woman’s Hospital and the Louisiana health care industry overall by providing the opportunity to:

  • Directly report to a member of the senior leadership team who, in collaboration with the fellow, will develop plans for the fellowship term, as well as their career
  • Develop broad competencies in operations, strategy, and finance.
  • Engage in projects or initiatives based on their unique interests and skillset.
  • Be exposed to high-level strategic planning and other health system functions, including marketing, human resources, and finance.
  • Develop mentoring relationships with Woman’s executives and management teams.
  • Grow as a leader by participating in various activities that cultivate professional growth.

Preceptor Relationships

The Administrative Fellow has a unique opportunity to connect with executive leaders from both clinical and non-clinical parts of the hospital. To further these conversations and mentor relationships, Fellowship Program preceptors are assigned based on their commitment to the Fellowship, serve as a mentor, and offer professional guidance throughout the program.

Program Elements

Orientation: During the Program’s first few weeks, the fellow participates in informational interviews with Woman’s senior leadership team.

Committee Meetings: The fellow rotates among key committees to gain a broad background and understanding of Woman’s Hospital. By observing leaders, the fellow gains awareness of various decision-making processes and challenges facing today's executives.

Clinical Shadowing: The fellow can rotate through various clinical departments within the hospitals and clinics at Woman’s. The clinical rotations are intended to give the fellow exposure to working with physicians, nurses and other clinical staff, and an opportunity to observe frontline procedures and patient care. These are scheduled at the fellow’s discretion.

Senior Leadership Meetings: The fellow meets regularly with senior executives to discuss fellowship progress, professional development opportunities, and current healthcare issues.

Projects: The fellow and his/her preceptor select mutually beneficial assignments to both the fellow and Woman’s Hospital. Projects can include implementing process improvement projects, utilizing change management, developing business plans and proformas, implementing new systems/software, and managing construction renovations.

Evaluation: The fellow will receive ongoing informal feedback and are officially evaluated by their preceptors each year.
