Summary

Dr. Tara Benjamin is a native of New Iberia, Louisiana. She attended Xavier University of New Orleans where she earned a bachelor of science with honors in Chemistry, Biology, English and Math. She then went on to obtain her medical doctorate from Harvard Medical School and completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Tulane University School of Medicine.

Following a year in General Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi, Dr. Benjamin completed her fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the School of Medicine at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) where she also earned a master’s degree in clinical research. She continued to serve on the clinical faculty at IUPUI for three years.

Dr. Benjamin has a specific interest in the care and management of pregnant women with Opioid Use Disorder.

In her free time, she enjoys traveling, reading, interior design and spending time with friends and family.

Opioid Misuse

While completing her fellowship in Maternal-Fetal in Indianapolis, Dr. Benjamin was recognized for starting a program for the care and management of pregnant women with Opioid Use Disorder.

Dr. Benjamin was named the first Director of the Maternal Recovery program, and the only MFM physician in Indiana with an X waiver to prescribe or dispense buprenorphine for opioid dependency treatment for 100 patients. She is considered an expert in perinatal substance use disorders.
