Woman’s Hospital welcomed its 300,000th baby, Liam Ray Guitreau, into the world on January 10, 2013 at 5:58 A.M., and it was a boy! Interestingly, his mom was also born at Woman's many years ago!
The baby was delivered by Dr. Curtis Solar, OB/GYN, with Louisiana Woman’s Healthcare. The hospital is celebrating this special milestone by asking everyone who was born or had a baby at Woman’s over the past 44 years to share our 300,000 Babies Badge on Facebook. Woman’s delivered its first baby in November 1968, its 100,000 baby in August 1985 and its 200,000 baby in September 2000.
“The birth of a child is a wonderful and amazing occasion, and we are honored that so many families have placed their trust in Woman’s,” says Teri Fontenot, President and CEO of Woman’s. “This milestone celebrates more than 44 years of achieving our vision of creating families and continued dedication by Woman’s staff.” Kadair’s Cameras/Audio Video has donated a newborn portrait package to the lucky family.
Woman’s impact on the community is evident when its volume of births is compared to the local population. The hospital’s birth census (300,000) now exceeds the current combined populations of Livingston and Ascension parishes, and is close to the current population of East Baton Rouge parish.
- Ascension Parish: 2011 population estimate: 109,985*
- Livingston Parish: 2011 population estimate: 130,251*
- East Baton Rouge Parish: 2011 population estimate: 441,438*

Additionally, when Woman’s Hospital opened in 1968, the population of East Baton Rouge Parish was an estimated 285,000. More than 44 years later, Woman’s has delivered that population and more.
Woman’s dominant role in the birthing community has led the hospital to often be referred to as the “Birthplace of Baton Rouge.” As Baton Rouge’s only birthing hospital for several decades, today it still remains the preferred choice among women. As of November 2012, according to ShareCor data, Woman’s delivers 77.7 percent of newborns in the greater Baton Rouge area. Woman’s is also the 16th largest delivery hospital in the United States with more than 8,500 births a year.
“We work hard to make every birth, every day, a memorable and joyous event for every family, and this milestone may have many recalling memories of the excitement of childbirth and the joy of a new baby, along with the challenges of bringing a newborn home for the first time,” Fontenot says.“Woman’s also recognizes there are times of sadness during childbirth, and we hold those memories just as close.”
With experience comes expertise.
The hospital’s new campus incorporates many design elements born out of 44 years, including larger rooms to welcome extended families, individual nurseries located closer to new mothers, Pink Parking to provide pregnant or new moms easier access to their physicians and a NICU with private rooms to allow parents to stay with their baby.
