Lower Back Pain During Pregnancy

Lower back pain is one of the most common problems associated with pregnancy. This is primarily due to the added weight carried in the front of the body. By being aware of the connection between the hips and the spine and planning your exercise around these principles, you can experience comfort, support and joy during your pregnancy.

Cancer Health and Fitness

Almost everyone has a friend or loved one who has been diagnosed with some form of cancer.
While this is certainly devastating news, it doesn’t have to mean the end of an active life. Woman's Cancer Health and Fitness Program is designed to improve overall fitness by increasing strength and endurance, reducing pain, and improving function, and is for both men and women who have been diagnosed with cancer.

Workout Fuel

Most of us use exercise as a tool to lose weight and burn body fat.  Make sure you practice good nutrition habits to maximize the amount of body fat you burn at your next workout.

Always eat before doing any physical activity to ensure your body has enough stored energy from carbohydrates to not only complete your exercise routine but also to start the fat burning process.  Examples of healthy choices for meals or snacks before exercise include whole wheat toast with peanut butter, a piece of fruit, yogurt with granola or a cereal bar.  Try to avoid choices with caffeine, a high amount of simple sugars, and choices without carbohydrates.

A registered dietitian is a food and nutrition expert who has the educational background and training to help you manage your nutritional health. You can find these nutrition experts at Woman's!

What is Tai Chi?

Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese exercise with movements that originated as a martial art form. Tai Chi is practiced widely for its health, stress management and relaxation benefits. It also helps to improve balance and creates an awareness of how the body moves. Tai Chi  helps to calm the mind and reduce stress by focusing your attention on the movements. Integrate your body, mind and spirit with techniques learned in Tai Chi.

Great Assets

It doesn’t seem fair, but women usually have more fat than men and store it in our hips and thighs. While losing fat and inches in one area is almost impossible, there are workouts that can help achieve better results. Focus on developing the lower body with strength and conditioning exercises. Our 6-week group personal training program works, and begins October 12 or 13.

Healthy Pantry

A healthy pantry should include wholesome whole grains, low sodium canned foods, smart snack choices, heart-healthy fats, bold flavors, and everyday produce. Whole grain breads, pastas, and cereals add fiber to our diet which can lower cholesterol and promote weight loss. Low sodium canned foods make it easy to prepare a quick and healthy meal. Snacks like kettle corn and granola bars provide beneficial nutrients without too many calories. We should use heart healthy fats such as olive oil and canola oil rather than saturated and trans fat choices. Use vinegars, dried herbs, or low sodium Asian sauces for big flavors. Keeping a stocked healthy pantry will help you to make better choices; getting you one step closer to achieving your healthy eating goals. Use items from this list of health choices for your pantry. Reading Food Labels

Reading food labels is an important part of creating a healthy lifestyle.  But food labels have so much information on them that sometimes it can be confusing. Check is the serving size, evaluate the calories, and look at the Saturated Fat, Trans Fat and sodium and fiber. Reading food labels may make you grocery shopping trip longer, but in the end the health benefit of choosing the right food is worth it. Have our registered dietitian guide you through a grocery store tour and learn more about improving your shopping skills.

Setting Goals

Sometimes we can change our image of ourselves by committing to a goal and working towards it with physical and mental training.  You may discover by setting these goals that the “means” may be more important than the “end.”  At the Fitness Club we are here to help you reach those goals whether it’s by yourself or with a personal trainer.
