Multiple Opportunities
Your Multiple Birth Experience

Exceptional care. Understanding the special nature of multiple pregnancy is an important part of prenatal care. Rest assured that the best specialists in the region are right here at Woman's. In fact, Woman's Hospital is a Level III Regional Referral Facility for obstetrical and neonatal care - the highest care designation a hospital can receive.

Experience matters. Woman's delivers more than 8,500 babies annually, is the largest delivery service in Louisiana and the 19th largest delivery service in the nation. Additionally, our NICU provides specialized care for 1,500 babies annually.

Our neonatologists are double-boarded which means they not only specialize in pediatric care but specifically in the care of sick babies as well. Our high-risk maternal-fetal-medicine physicians maintain specializations not only in obstetrical care but in the care of pregnant women and babies with a high risk of complications. Woman's also maintains relationships with fertility doctors who specialize in the obstetrical care and in reproductive endocrinology which helps to support a safe pregnancy.

Centered on you. Marvelous Multiples® at Woman's Hospital is a prenatal education class that offers expectant parents information about many of the aspects of multiple pregnancy and birth that are not covered in the other childbirth education classes. Register as soon as you learn you are pregnant with multiples.

Our expert staff includes maternal-fetal doctors with training and experience in the care of high-risk mothers and their babies, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week; the only board-certified geneticist in Baton Rouge; registered nurses; registered sonographers (experts trained to perform ultrasound testing); and support personnel - all dedicated to the highest standards of care.

Our maternal-fetal medicine specialists work with your obstetrician to offer care for all types of pregnancies with complications such as diabetes, preterm labor, high blood pressure and multiple births, as well as other prenatal complications. Many diagnostic tests are available. Services also include counseling for conditions such as cystic fibrosis, Tay-Sachs disease, sickle cell anemia, and other genetic conditions. Our fetal medicine services include monitoring fetal growth and identification of birth defects. Our specialized team sees patients through our clinics at seven outreach hospitals across Louisiana and south Mississippi.

Care for you. Our antepartum (literally, "before childbirth") unit is a high-risk obstetrical area. Nurses on this unit are trained to care for women confined to bed rest. Maternal and fetal surveillance as well as non-stress testing are conducted on the unit. Maternal-fetal medicine physicians admit as well as consult with attending ob/gyns to monitor the care of patients. Unit staff members work to create a home-like atmosphere and involvement of family members is encouraged. Antepartal extended-stay patients have access to a resource center complete with kitchenette, washer, dryer, and education area.

Care for your babies. After delivery, your babies will be the center of your world as well as ours. Our neonatologists are board certified in both pediatrics and neonatology which means they have the experience necessary to provide your babies with the care they need.  Our NICU is the only one in the area in which an anesthesiologist and a neonatologist are in-house 24 hours a day, 7 days a week should your babies need them.

From masters' prepared social workers, discharge coordinators, and advanced practice nurses to a lactation consultant and anesthesiologists who specialize in pediatric anesthesia, our staff continues to research and explore new treatments and therapies to ensure your babies receive the best possible care.

Specialized surgery. Woman's has a specialized infant surgery team that performs 240 infant surgeries a year on babies under the age of 1. An operating room customized for infants is located in the NICU to provide life-saving procedures quickly and easily without need for transport out of the unit or hospital. Woman's is one of only a handful of hospitals across the nation able to provide support for highly specialized surgeries like an EXIT procedure - a unique procedure which allows surgery on a baby to be performed before delivery.
