Laparoscopy and Endoscopy

Woman's offers the latest diagnostic and surgical techniques available, including laparoscopic procedures. In our operating room suites, a variety of conditions are diagnosed and treated with laparoscopy, a type of surgery in which a scope is inserted into the abdominal and pelvic regions through small incisions in the abdominal wall. Laparoscopy offers women the benefit of smaller incisions than conventional surgery, resulting in a shortened hospital stay and recovery period.

Laparoscopy is transforming many common procedures by reducing recovery times, minimizing adhesions and visible scars, and giving women more options for surgeries as diverse as Nissen fundoplication for gastroesophageal reflux disease to gall bladder removal and hysterectomies.

Using the video images for guidance, the surgeon inserts a variety of small surgical instruments through the incisions to perform the procedure without directly handling the organs. Carbon dioxide gas, pumped into the abdomen after the patient is asleep under general anesthesia, expands the abdominal cavity so the surgeon has room to work.

The healing time after laparoscopic surgery is faster than for open surgery because it does not require wide incisions through the muscles. That means less time in the hospital and a quicker return to normal activities.

The team approach. Woman’s surgical nurses use a team approach to ensure optimal patient outcomes for patients. While all nurses can assist with all procedures, each nurse also belongs to a team with a special interest and expertise in a particular type of surgery. Resource nurses for each team keep abreast of new equipment and techniques to share with other team members.

The highly skilled team of instrument technicians in Surgical Services ensures that specialized surgical equipment is always in flawless condition for the delicate procedures for which it is designed.

At Woman's, we understand that women have unique needs, especially when it comes to health care. If you're facing laparoscopic surgery, ask your doctor about having it done at Woman's Hospital.

Hospital stays after surgery have become shorter. Now, more than ever, it is important for you to be prepared for surgery and to take an active part in your recovery.
