Woman’s Hospital and Bariatric Surgeon, First in World, to Perform Gastric Sleeve with SPIDER Flexible Ligating Shears

On April 14, Dr. Andrew Hargroder, Bariatric Surgeon, performed the first gastric sleeve bariatric surgery using Flexible Ligating Shears at Woman’s Hospital. The device is the only fully flexible advanced energy device for ligation and dividing tissue (connecting and cutting tissue) in complex surgery.
“This device allows the surgeon to easily reach abdominal spaces with a 360 degree radius. The SPIDER Flexible Ligating Shears’ dexterity and use of thermal energy enables precise surgery while limiting impact to surrounding tissues, thereby continuing to improve gastric sleeve patient outcomes through faster recovery,” said Dr. Hargroder.
The Flexible Ligating Shears, approved by the FDA in 2013, were specifically modified for the SPIDER system. The SPIDER system allows multiple instruments to be introduced into the navel, thus enabling a surgeon to perform a gastric sleeve procedure with fewer incisions.
In 2012, Dr. Hargroder was the first Louisiana surgeon to use the SPIDER for “belly button” bariatric surgery, also performed at Woman’s. The sleeve gastrectomy is a weight loss surgery that reduces the size of the stomach while preserving the natural routing of food, and is the fastest growing primary surgical weight loss procedure in the U.S.
