National Walk @ Lunch Day

April 23, 2013

Wednesday, April 24, 2013 National Walk @ Lunch DayWoman’s Hospital employees invite the community to celebrate National Walk @ Lunch Day with a pre-walk warm up for the March for Babies along the one-mile walking path around Woman’s campus lake. The 2013 March for Babies event will be held on Saturday, April 27 at AZ Young Park at 755 3rd Street.
—     Kicking off the lunchtime exercise will be Woman’s President and CEO, Teri Fontenot, the 2013 Baton Rouge March for Babies chair; this year’s March of Dimes Ambassador Mom; and Woman’s Chief of Neonatology.
—     The March of Dimes is celebrating its 75th anniversary of helping newborns lead healthier lives.
—     Woman’s Newborn and Infant Intensive Care Unit (NICU) cares for more than 1,200 babies each year. Woman’s has delivered more than 300,000 babies in its 44-year history.
—     One of the best ways to prevent birth defects is through “preconception care,” or improving a woman’s health habits to improve her chances of getting pregnant, having a healthy pregnancy and having a healthy baby. These include the following:

  1. Take 0.4 to 0.8 mg of folic acid every day.
  2. Stop smoking and drinking alcohol.
  3. If you have a medical condition, be sure it is under control.
  4. Talk to your doctor about any over-the-counter and prescription medicines.
  5. Avoid contact with toxic substances or materials that could cause infection at work and at home.
