Nail Care 101
The first line of defense regarding nail growth is to protect your nails. Wearing gloves while doing household chores should be a priority. Hands that stay damp can result in nails that soften, split and ultimately break. Harsh cleaning products can dry out the hands and cuticles. Using a nail strengthener can help prevent these issues.
An emery board is the best tool for nail filing. The dark side is for filing and the light side is for smoothing. When filing, it is best to go in one direction. Filing from side to side weakens the nail. Avoid the corners of the nail as this can also weaken the nail.
Never cut cuticles! Cuticles protect the nail from infection. When you cut them, they will grow back thicker. The best way to care for your cuticles is to use a good quality cuticle oil and push them back with an orange wood stick. Keeping your hands moisturized and using cuticle oil will also reduce the incidence of hangnails which can be carefully trimmed. Polish remover with acetone is harsh and can have a drying affect on your cuticles and the skin around your nail causing hangnails. Non-acetone removers are a better choice.
Before applying polish, make sure the surface of the nail is clean and free of lotion or oil. Using a cotton swab dipped in fingernail polish remover will do the trick. Always use a base coat. This will keep polish from chipping and staining your nail. Nail color should be applied in three strokes, one on each side and one in the middle. Applying two coats will give your nail color a richer look. A few minutes of drying time between coats will give the next layer of polish a better chance to adhere. Fast drying polishes should be avoided. They are not a time saver because they do not last as long. Applying a top coat will make your nails shine as well as help the longevity of your manicure.
A Little Lagniappe
Nail Polish can be stored in the refrigerator. Storing in a warm place will change the consistency. Only thin nail polish with a polish thinner, never use remover. Applying petroleum jelly to the rim of the polish bottle will keep the cap from sticking.
