Saturday, March 22, 2014 Get Your Rear in Gear Baton Rouge is hosting its third colon cancer 5K run/walk & kids' fun run. The public is invited and encouraged to organize teams to participate in this family-friendly exercise fundraiser. 75% of all proceeds remain in the Baton Rouge community and benefit colon cancer care and education.
Time: 8:00am - 4:30pm
Location: Pennington Biomedical Research Center (6400 Perkins Rd.)
“Get Your Rear in Gear’s goal is to help raise awareness of colon cancer by honoring survivors, remembering those that we’ve lost, and magnifying the importance of the ‘dreaded’ colonoscopy as the single most important cancer fighting tool in our arsenal against colon cancer,” explains Dr. Kelly Finan, Colorectal surgeon at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center and Woman’s Hospital.
Colon cancer is one of the most curable and preventable cancers today, yet it’s the second leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. “We need to raise awareness of the symptoms, the importance of recommended colonoscopies, and encourage prevention measures,” says Finan. She warns that, “Louisianans are at an increased risk of colon cancer due to our diet and obesity rates; too many good southern dishes are impacting more than just our waistlines.”
Dr. Finan challenges south Louisiana residents to “Get Their Rears In Gear” by walking, running, or simply volunteering at the city’s second colon cancer-specific walk. It's due to the tremendous support of sponsors that the Get Your Rear in Gear - Baton Rouge 5K is made possible. And through the race's resulting publicity and fundraising, sponsors help us generate greater awareness of colon cancer and provide screenings to those who might otherwise be unable to afford them.
While advances in treating colon cancer continue to grow, the single most significant advancement is still early detection. “If you are 50 years old, or have a family history of colon cancer, it’s time to get off the fence and schedule your colonoscopy,” demands Finan. She smiles and says that, “Nearly everyone will corroborate that the prep is the worst part and it’s well worth the inconvenience to fight cancer.”
Pre-registration is $25 per adult and $12 per child and includes race participation and admission to the celebration which includes live music and food. Participants can register online.
