Obstetric ultrasonography enables a clear clinical advantage for assessing the developing fetus in terms of visualizing the embryo or fetus in its mother’s uterus. The procedure is a standard part of prenatal care because it yields a variety of information regarding the health of the mother and of the fetus, the progress of the pregnancy, and further information on the baby.

At the conclusion of this presentation, the participant will be able to:

  • Review normal development of the fetus and female pelvis during each trimester of pregnancy.
  • Describe the most accurate method used to obtain measurements for calculating fetal size and gestational age.
  • Examine ultrasonically distinguishable images to document pregnancy outside the uterus.
  • Document and measure the number of fetuses, as well as placental locations and abnormalities.
  • Assess fetal cardiac anatomy and function by expanding the four chamber view.
